Kim Jong Un warns hostile US policy means there will never be denuclearization on Korean Peninsula

At a meeting of ruling party officials, the North Korean leader also said his country's long term security will be guaranteed by staying on constant alert and relying on "the powerful nuclear deterrent capable of containing the nuclear threats from the US," according to the Korean Central News Agency.
KCNA released the report at the end of "The 5th Plenary Meeting of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea." In the plenary, Kim said "the DPRK will steadily develop necessary and prerequisite strategic weapons for the security of the state until the US rolls back its hostile policy towards the DPRK and lasting and durable peace-keeping mechanism is built."
In an indication that North Korea could soon resume nuclear weapon testing, Kim said his country should no longer feel bound by its self-imposed halt on nuclear weapons and long-range missile testing. He also announced that "the world will witness a new strategic weapon" in the near future, KCNA reported.
National security adviser says US is prepared to take action if North Korea delivers its 'Christmas gift'
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News later Tuesday that he hoped the North Korean leader "doesn't go in that direction" and instead will "choose peace and prosperity over conflict and war."
The US is "hopeful" that Kim "will make the right decision," he said, also telling CBS Evening News that "if Chairman Kim has reneged on the commitments he made to President Trump, that is deeply disappointing."
"We've lived up to our commitments, we continue to hold out hope that he'll live up to his as well," Pompeo said.
Kim's threats come as American officials closely monitor North Korea following its promise earlier this month to deliver a "Christmas gift" to the US. On Sunday, National security adviser Robert O'Brien said the US is prepared to take action if the so-called gift is delivered, including a potential long-range missile test. Pompeo said Monday that the US is watching Pyongyang "very closely" in light of the "Christmas gift" threat.
The country had promised the gift if the US doesn't provide concessions like sanctions relief by its self-imposed, year-end deadline. The Trump administration had widely interpreted the promise of a "Christmas gift" to mean a weapons test, especially as intelligence indicators grew. Though no such tests have been detected from North Korea since Christmas, officials have remained watchful in the days following the holiday.
The KCNA report Tuesday said that Kim "solemnly declared that there is no need to hesitate with any expectation of the US lift of sanctions even now that we had close look into the real intention of the US."
The leader also said North Korea "will reliably put on constant alert the powerful nuclear deterrent capable of containing the nuclear threats from the US," the state news agency reported.
This, Kim said, will guarantee "our long-term security, noting that the scope and depth of bolstering our deterrent will be properly coordinated depending on the (US') future attitude (toward) the DPRK."
This story has been updated with additional developments Tuesday.

Tennessee woman wants a New York police officer who barged into her home and was accused of a racial slur to be fired

Michael Reynolds, 26, is on modified duty status with the New York Police Department and is subject to an internal review, according to the department, meaning he has turned over his badge and gun and has been placed on non-enforcement duties.
Court records from Tennessee indicate he was found guilty of three counts of assault with fear of bodily injury and one count of aggravated criminal trespass. The charges came after an incident in which he barged into the house next to one he and and a group of men, including two other police officers, had rented on Airbnb for a bachelor party weekend.
A judge sentenced Reynolds to 15 days in jail and ordered him to pay more than $1,000 in court costs, according to online court records. After his jail term, to be started by January 15, he will be on unsupervised probation for almost three years.
"Michael Reynolds is a violent and dangerous racist who has no business carrying either a badge or a gun," Daniel Horwitz, attorney for Conese Halliburton, the 42-year-old woman who lives next to where Reynolds was staying, said. "Ms. Halliburton wants the NYPD to fire him immediately so that he can't hurt anyone else, and we are all frankly dumbfounded that that has not happened already."
CNN reached out to an attorney for Reynolds, but didn't get a response. Reynolds testified at his sentencing hearing in December that he had been drinking and had no recollection of using a racial slur that night, adding that it's not the type of language he uses in work or daily life.
Halliburton testified in court that she heard screaming on her front yard before Reynolds stormed into her home at about 2:30 a.m. on July 9, 2018. He was yelling obscenities and claiming it was his house, Halliburton said, while her dogs tried to bite at his legs.
Reynolds began to leave after being confronted by her 20-year-old son, Halliburton told the court. As he walked out the door, Reynolds said, "I'm going to shoot y'all n*****s," according to Halliburton.
Asked in court whether he had any reason to doubt Halliburton's description of the night, Reynolds said, "No."
Halliburton and a neighbor confronted the officer and his two friends the next day, according to their court testimony. The officers, they said, responded with laughter and claimed "immunity" as police officers.
Reynolds told the court in December he had been suspended by his department for 30 days.
The two other police officers who were with Reynolds in Nashville for the bachelor party lost vacation days after the incident, Reynolds said.

Mariah Carey's Twitter account appears to have been hacked

On New Year's Eve, Carey's Twitter account appeared to have been hacked -- posting dozens of offensive, racist and lewd tweets, including the N-word and sexual comments about rapper Eminem.
The tweets were deleted by the evening. Some mentioned the "Chuckling Squad," which is the same hacker collective blamed for targeting YouTubers and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in the past.
CNN has called and emailed Carey's representatives for comment.

The right response to cadets' revolting Nazi salute

Jill Filipovic
All of those correctional cadets from the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation Basic Training Class 18 who were photographed apparently giving a Nazi salute will be fired, thanks to the decision by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice to approve a recommendation from an internal report on the incident.
"We have a lot of good people in the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety," Justice said in a statement. "But this incident was completely unacceptable."
He said three staff members at the training academy will be fired. And four instructors who did not report the photograph will be suspended without pay.
Two trainers and a cadet were canned earlier, while 34 others were suspended without pay during the investigation of the photo, which was released Dec. 5 (with faces blurred) by the state's Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. Some cadets said that they were ordered to raise their arm in a salute to a training instructor for their class identified only as "Instructor Byrd."
Byrd told a member of the secretarial staff, according to the investigation by the department and its Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, to caption the photo "Hail Byrd," "because I'm a hard-ass like Hitler."
There are two threads worth pulling apart here. First is the most obvious one: the glorification of Nazi violence. Hitler wasn't a "hard-ass;" he was a genocidal dictator who ordered and oversaw some of the worst atrocities in modern history (he was also, as most tyrants are, a pathetic and fearful little man). Hitler and his Nazis killed some 6 million Jews, and millions of others: people with disabilities, Roma people, gay people and those who dared stand up to him.
Anti-Semitic attacks show a society at risk of falling apart
That's not a "hard-ass." That's a vicious, murderous anti-Semite and a man so vile it's hard to come up with appropriately derogatory descriptors. To encourage cadets to think of you like Hitler and, by extension, of themselves like Nazis? That's poison.
Anti-Semitism remains pervasive in the United States and around the world, surfacing in atrocities such as the stabbings carried out in Monsey, New York, last weekend. According to the New York Police Department and the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic hate crimes are on the rise.
So good riddance to all of these Nazi-saluting cadets.
But there's something else here, too. If the cadets are gesturing like Nazis -- glorifying their obedience to a "hard-ass" leader, who exactly are they all collectively terrorizing? Nazis, after all, are menacing only because they have blameless, helpless victims.
These cadets were training to work in West Virginia's prisons, jails and juvenile correctional facilities. Correctional cadets are already entering a field where abuse is rife and where a sadistic streak of authoritarianism can too often be allowed to flourish.
West Virginia is 93% white, but, according to data from the advocacy group Prison Policy Initiative, nearly a third of its prisoners are black. Hispanic people are also over-represented in West Virginia correctional facilities. Prison guards have been accused of rape and other assaults in West Virginia prisons.
The treatment of prison populations, including children, is at the whim of corrections officers. Rogue guards have been known across the country to abuse their power and act with tremendous brutality toward inmates --too often effectively protected from punishment by union rules.
Within this larger context, this incident suggests the problem likely doesn't begin and end with these cadets, who, predictably, say they were just following orders -- in this case, from Instructor Byrd.
Firing everyone involved is the correct first step, but it can't be the last one. The West Virginia Department of Corrections needs an expansive investigation into the culture that made this photo seem like an acceptable idea in the first place -- however clueless the adult cadets claim to have been.
What else are cadets learning about their role supervising and keeping safe the incarcerated population? How are working guards treating the incarcerated? Are people in prison being kept safe in West Virginia, or is the tolerance for cruelty that this photo arguably suggests already being leveraged against people with few avenues for reporting, and who stand to pay a steep price for speaking out?
The cabinet secretary of West Virginia's Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety and the commissioner of the department's Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation both recommended additional training, though neither was specific.
The photo was an ugly symbol of a murderous ideology. But firing the people who raised their arms in a Nazi salute does not root out any of the potential underlying rot among those in positions of authority over future key players in America's justice system. West Virginia needs to dig deeper to find what's festering underneath.

US sending additional forces to protect embassy threatened by protesters in Iraq

"At the direction of the Commander in Chief, I have authorized the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force of the 82nd Airborne Division (in Fort Bragg, North Carolina) to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in response to recent events in Iraq," Esper said, adding that additional forces "are prepared to deploy over the next several days."
"This deployment is an appropriate and precautionary action taken in response to increased threat levels against U.S. personnel and facilities, such as we witnessed in Baghdad today. The United States will protect our people and interests anywhere they are found around the world," Esper added.
In a statement earlier Tuesday, Esper said the US would deploy "additional forces to support our personnel at the Embassy" and that officials had "taken appropriate force protection actions to ensure the safety of American citizens, military personnel and diplomats" serving in Iraq.
"As in all countries, we rely on host nation forces to assist in the protection of our personnel in country, and we call on the Government of Iraq to fulfill its international responsibilities to do so," Esper said.
The US had sent two Apache helicopters to fly over the embassy in a show of force, a US official told CNN earlier Tuesday. The US also earlier deployed about 100 US Marines from a crisis response task force based in Kuwait to bolster security at the embassy. Those Marines flew into the embassy compound aboard MV-22 Osprey aircraft.
A defense official told CNN earlier Tuesday that it was unlikely that the additional soldiers coming from the 82nd Airborne will be sent to Iraq, but will instead be sent to a nearby country or countries in the region so they are positioned to respond quickly if the situation deteriorates.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News Tuesday evening that there are currently no plans to evacuate the embassy or pull out US troops.
The deployment comes amid fallout over US airstrikes against five facilities the Pentagon says are tied to an Iranian-backed militia blamed for a series of attacks on joint US-Iraq military facilities housing American forces.
Two sources at the demonstration on Tuesday witnessed an attempt to break into the premises, adding that security personnel fired tear gas to repel the attack. Video footage shows demonstrators smashing windows, burning items outside and throwing rocks over the walls. The embassy, in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, has been put under lockdown, but protesters have not been able to breach the compound, an embassy spokesperson told CNN.
The airstrikes occurred at about 11 a.m. ET Sunday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. Killing at least 25 people and wounding 51, they stand as the first significant military response in retaliation for attacks by the Shia militia group, known as Kataib Hezbollah, that have injured numerous American military personnel, according to US officials.
Many of those who attempted to storm the embassy appeared to members of the same militia group.
Esper briefed Trump Saturday before carrying them out with the President's approval, according to a US official familiar with the strikes.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman described the strikes against the group as "precision defensive strikes" that "will degrade" the group's ability to conduct future attacks against coalition forces.
President Donald Trump confirmed Tuesday that the airstrikes were a response to a recent attack that killed a US contractor. He blamed Iran both for the contractor's death and Tuesday's attack on the embassy.
"Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!" Trump tweeted.

TV personality Stacy London introduces girlfriend on Instagram

In an Instagram post Tuesday, the TV personality revealed she's been dating musician Cat Yezbak. It is, wrote London, her "first serious relationship with a woman."
"I haven't paraded her around on social media for several reasons: 1) I've had public relationships before and I don't love that. But I want to be clear here that with Cat I felt I owed us the chance to be private since this is my first serious relationship with a woman and I'm sure there will be some hoo ha about that. But I would never hide her out of shame," London wrote. "2.) It's really easy for me, a privileged white woman who is 50, to suddenly say 'I'm dating a woman' with very few repercussions and I am well aware of that."
She added: "Unlike me, there are countless people in the LGBTQIAP community who have had no choice in who they are, no love from family on which to lean, no support from anyone anywhere."
London is a fashion expert best known for hosting 10 seasons of the TLC makeover series "What Not To Wear." She also hosted a similar program, "Love, Lust or Run."
In 2018, she revealed her struggle with health issues and financial problems in a personal essay.
"I fell in love, truly in love, with this beautiful, sexy, kind soul and I won't apologize for that but I stand on the shoulders of a community that fought like hell for me to be able to do that openly and proudly and EASILY," London added on Tuesday. "It's one thing to SAY Love is Love. It's another thing to say Love is Passion and Devotion and Sex and mean it without shame or prejudice when talking about the same sex. So I used to date men. Now I date her. That's it. That's all I have to say."

Pope Francis smacks woman's hand to free himself from her grip

The pope was making his way to the Nativity scene at the center of Vatican City.
As he walked away from the crowd, a woman grabbed his hand and yanked him toward her, video shows.
He became visibly upset and began slapping the woman's hand in an attempt to free himself from her grip, and he briefly shouted at the woman.
Prior to the incident, the woman had made a sign of the cross. She addressed the 83-year-old pope as he took his hand but it's unclear what she was trying to tell him.

The most anticipated buildings set to shape the world in 2020

Written by Oscar Holland, CNN

The past year in architecture has been filled with milestones, from the completion of Africa's tallest building to the opening of Europe's first underwater restaurant. We also watched in horror as Notre Dame burned, gained new "supertall" skyscrapers and lost industry giants like I.M. Pei and César Pelli.

But at the dawn of a new decade, it seems fitting to look ahead at the structures set to shape our cities -- and architecture itself -- in the coming year.

From museums and skyscrapers, to a hotel with a hole in it, these are CNN Style's most anticipated buildings opening or completing in 2020.

Vancouver House, Vancouver, Canada

BIG / Luxigon

Twisting from a triangular base to a rectangular top, Vancouver House appears to defy the laws of engineering when viewed from afar.

It's precisely the sort of eccentricity we've come to expect from Bjarke Ingels, the Danish architect who recently built a ski slope on top of a power plant in Copenhagen. But it's also a smart response to various restrictions and regulations that limited the size of the tower's footprint in downtown Vancouver.

The pixelated facade, also characteristic of Ingels' work, helps to create deep-set balconies for residents in the 493-foot-tall tower.

Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center, Nanjing, China

MAD Architects

Taking inspiration from traditional Chinese "shanshui" paintings (literally "mountain and water"), Ma Yansong's curved creations merge nature with the built environment. This new 23-acre development in the historic city of Nanjing is surely the most ambitious realization of the architect's "shanshui city" concept to date.

Irregular white fins give the complex's towers the appearance of icy mountains, their flowing lines contributing to what Beijing-born Ma's firm, MAD, describes as a "philosophy of cooperation between humanity and nature." At ground level, six separate plots are connected via man-made streams and footbridges.

With the country's authorities pushing for increasingly conservative architecture, the complex is a refreshing reminder of what bold Chinese architecture can look like.

Powerhouse Telemark, Porsgrunn, Norway

Bloomimages / Snøhetta

Snøhetta made international headlines last year when its underwater restaurant -- Europe's first -- opened near the southernmost tip of Norway. But the design firm has also gained a reputation for innovative carbon-negative buildings that, over their lifetimes, produce more energy than they consume.

Located on the banks of the Porsgrunn River, the practice's latest "energy-positive" project, Powerhouse Telemark, has been designed to "set a new standard for the construction of the buildings of tomorrow."

Everything about the sleek structure, which is almost entirely coated in photovoltaic cells, has its carbon footprint in mind, from a diamond shape that maximizes the solar energy it captures, to the use of recycled materials from local demolition projects.

New Museum of Western Australia, Perth, Australia

Peter Bennetts / Hassell / OMA

In designing a museum on a site littered with historic buildings, architecture firms Hassell and OMA faced a delicate task: building a 21st-century museum while preserving the surrounding heritage.

The result is a striking contemporary creation that complements, interacts with and wraps around existing structures -- some of which date back to the mid-19th century -- producing an unlikely synergy of brick, glass and steel.

Perhaps the most striking feature is how the museum's huge upper volume hangs dramatically over Hackett Hall, the State Library's old reading room.

Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt

Grand Egyptian Museum work - April 2019

Mohamed-El-Shahed/AFP/Getty Images

Such have been the delays facing the Grand Egyptian Museum that it featured on this very list two years ago -- and the $1-billion project is still yet to open.

Having said that, 2020 looks sure to be the year it finally does. As well as offering a permanent home to tens of thousands of archeological treasures, including the entire contents of Tutankhamun's tomb, the 5.2-million-square-foot museum symbolizes efforts to repair the country's tourism industry in the wake of the 2011 revolution.

The building's glass-fronted design, first unveiled over 15 years ago, will offer sweeping panoramas of the Great Pyramids and Giza plateau.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport, Berlin, Germany

Günter Wicker / Flughafen Berlin

Berlin's new Brandenburg airport is, perhaps, less anticipated for its design than for the fact it's almost a decade late.

Following years of setbacks, the German capital's new transport hub is finally due to open its doors in 2020. And while it wouldn't be the project's first missed deadline (officials initially expected it to open in October 2011), there seems to be an air of certainty about the recent announcement that the airport would enter operation in October.

The terminal building, which sits between two parallel runways, was designed to represent the region's architectural heritage. Official press materials cite the influence of 19th-century Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the celebrated Bauhaus art school.

Opus, Dubai, UAE

Laurian Ghinitoiu / Zaha Hadid Architects

More than three years after her death, Zaha Hadid continues to shape the world's cities with her bold, curvilinear creations.

Opus, which was first proposed by the British-Iraqi architect in 2007, takes the form of a glass-fronted cube punctured with an asymmetric hole that appears to bulge at the seams. Yet, closer inspection reveals that the building is formed from two separate towers joined by a four-story atrium at its base and a footbridge connecting the upper floors.

The structure will house a boutique hotel -- with interiors also designed by Hadid -- as well as office space and restaurants. Despite being located just a kilometer from the 2,717-feet-tall Burj Khalifa, it might yet be the neighborhood's most eye-catching piece of architecture.

1000 Trees, Shanghai, China

Qingyan Zhu / Heatherwick Studio

British designer Thomas Heatherwick has never been short of ambition. And now his seemingly farfetched vision of a tree-covered urban mountain has become a reality.

The 3.2-million-square foot development now occupies a huge stretch of riverside in Shanghai. Structural columns emerge from the structure's mass to hold some of the plants and greenery alluded to in the project's name, 1000 Trees.

More than a piece of architecture, this is, in Heatherwick Studio's own words, "a piece of topography."

M+ Museum, Hong Kong SAR, China

Courtesy of Herzog & de Meuron / West Kowloon Cultural District Authority

Set across a huge swathe of reclaimed land in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, the West Kowloon Cultural District has been more than 20 years in the making. And of the many theaters and cultural institutions set to eventually open in the development, none are more hotly anticipated than M+.

The museum is expected to have one of the Asian continent's most impressive collections of contemporary visual art. Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has built a visually arresting design to boot -- a horizontal slab (containing exhibitions spaces) and a vertical one (housing everything else) conjoined into an upside-down "T."

Although the building is set to complete within the next few months, it will be another nine to 12 months before its opened to the public. Nonetheless, it's a major milestone for the long-awaited cultural quarter.

Singapore Pavilion at the Dubai Expo 2020, Dubai, UAE

Singapore Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai

From October, Expo 2020 will see hundreds of participating countries construct pavilions in and around Dubai. There will be plenty of impressive architecture on display, from Canada's circular wooden theater to Austria's ensemble of huge interlocking cones.

But perhaps the most ambitious idea is that of Singapore: to create an oasis in the Arabian desert.

The city-state's pavilion will bring dense greenery to the UAE, with canopies leading visitors through a lush hanging garden of trees, shrubs and orchids. And the architecture firm behind the project, WOHA, thinks it can make the project energy neutral over the course of the expo.

Innovations to that end include solar-powered desalination systems for irrigation and a cantilevered roof to provide shade.

Alex Jones and Infowars ordered to pay $100,000 in fees for Sandy Hook case

Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son Jesse was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012, sued Jones and Infowars in April 2018 for making allegedly defamatory statements against him and other victims' families. Jones "has repeatedly and unequivocally called the Sandy Hook shooting a hoax," according to the lawsuit.
Earlier this month, Texas judge Scott Jenkins granted Heslin's motion for sanctions and legal expenses after the defendants disobeyed a court order to provide a witness list and documentation, and ordered the defendants to pay Heslin's legal fees, in the amount of $65,825.
In a separate decision, Jenkins ruled against the defendants' motion to dismiss and ordered the defendants pay Heslin $34,323.80 in legal fees.
The Daily Beast first reported the rulings.
Ex-Infowars employee says he was 'disgusted' by Sandy Hook coverage, but laughed at when he raised objections
"Mr. Jones is learning there are severe consequences for his refusal to take these lawsuits seriously," Mark Bankston, Heslin's attorney, said in an email to CNN Business.
Bankston told CNN Business he expects a jury trial against Jones to be scheduled before the end of 2020. The suit was filed in Travis County District Court in Austin, Texas, where Jones operates Infowars.
In an email to CNN Business, Jones's attorney, T. Wade Jefferies, framed Jones's statements as a matter of protected political speech, and said, "the case should have been dismissed, but the trial court did not do so. This erroneous decision will be appealed."
Regarding the legal fees, Jefferies said that, by law, "some of the attorney fees award was required to be awarded to the prevailing party on the Motions to Dismiss" and that "the balance of the attorney's fee award was for procedural matters handled by previous out of state counsel" who has since been replaced.
Jefferies denied his clients' involvement in the discovery issues leading to the sanctions award, saying that "such issues have been, or will be, cured." He also said that the amount the court awarded for attorney fees is "excessive."
In October, Jenkins ruled the defendant pay more than $25,000, Austin-American Statesman reported.
Heslin's suit was the first legal action taken against Jones for his false statements about the Sandy Hook shooting, but it's not the only suit against the conspiracy theorist currently pending. In May 2018, families of four students and two educators who died in the shooting filed a suit in a Connecticut court. The case argues a reasonable person would understand Jones's statements meant the Sandy Hook massacre was staged and the deaths were fabricated. Jones denied the allegations. That lawsuit has been stalled, The New York Times reported. The defendants in that suit are appealing to the Connecticut Supreme Court the trial court's ruling striking their motion to dismiss.

Lawyer for indicted Giuliani associate asks court's permission to share material with House investigators

"Review of these materials is essential to the Committee's ability to corroborate the strength of Mr. Parnas's potential testimony," Joe Bondy, the lawyer for the indicted Giuliani associate, wrote in a letter to the Judge Paul Oetken, referring to the Democratic-led House Intelligence Committee.
Bondy wrote in the letter he expects to receive on Tuesday the contents of the iPhone and some documents seized from Parnas' home from prosecutors. He told Oetken he isn't sure how much of the material he will share with the Democrats on the committee.
Parnas, a Soviet-born American who worked with Giuliani to push claims of Democratic corruption in Ukraine, was charged in New York federal court in early October with conspiracy and campaign finance-related violations and has pleaded not guilty to his criminal charges. The Manhattan federal prosecutors continue to consider other charges related to his case, though their exact approach is unknown.
House Democrats subpoena indicted Giuliani associates
The same day Parnas and Igor Fruman, another Giuliani associate, were arrested in October, three House committees leading the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump subpoenaed the two men -- demanding they turn over documents related to communications with the White House, Ukrainian officials and Giuliani by October 16.
The subpoenas requested Parnas and Fruman provide documents and communications related to efforts to persuade the Ukrainians to investigate Burisma, the energy company that placed former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter on its board, as well as the ouster of US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, for which Parnas and Fruman had pushed. There's no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe or Hunter Biden in Ukraine.
It's unclear how much information could be revealed by Parnas' iPhone, or how much it will help Democrats' case against the President. Earlier this month, the House voted to impeach Trump, charging him with abuse of power for withholding nearly $400 million in US military aid from Ukraine and a White House meeting while pressuring Ukraine's president to investigate a Joe Biden, a potential political rival, and obstruction of Congress for thwarting the House's investigative efforts.

A teen whose teachers were sending him schoolwork in ICE detention just won his asylum case

After ICE detained 18-year-old Mario Aguilar, teachers sent him schoolwork so he wouldn't fall behind and traveled to court hearings so he'd see a friendly face.
Students saved his seat, made "Free Mario" signs in the school's print shop and rallied for his release.
English language teacher Cynthia Clampitt wrote instructions for Mario on sticky notes in the homework packet she sent him.
The community at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Connecticut, which CNN featured in a story earlier this month, has been anxiously awaiting a ruling in the case for weeks.
Monday, Aguilar's supporters said they'd finally gotten good news.
"The immigration judge granted asylum in Mario's case, and we are thrilled with that result," attorney Ben Haldeman said in an email.
But the teen remains detained. And it's unclear when he'll be released.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said the agency "does not comment on issues/claims/allegations not related to a detainee's enforcement status without a signed privacy waiver from the individual." According to the agency's detainee locator, Aguilar is still being held at the Bristol County House of Corrections in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
ICE attorneys have 30 days after a ruling to tell a judge whether they'll appeal. And if the agency does appeal, the student could remain detained for months longer, unless officials decide to release him while proceedings continue.
Ann Brillante, an assistant principal at Wilbur Cross, told CNN there's no reason for officials to delay his release.
"He was no risk to anybody. He was no danger to anybody. He should not have been held ever, at all," she said.
A bulletin board dedicated to Mario Aguilar hangs in the hallway at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Connecticut. Since ICE detained Aguilar in September, students, teachers and administrators at the school have been pushing for his release.
Instead of spending more time behind bars, Brillante said her student should be back in class.
"It's urgent," she said. "Every minute counts in terms of learning English and in terms of progressing towards graduation."
Aguilar was born in Guatemala and came to the United States as an unaccompanied minor in 2018. His attorneys say he was fleeing persecution and seeking safety.
ICE deportation officers arrested him in September outside a Connecticut courthouse where he'd gone to face charges after a car accident, including driving under the influence, operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to insure a private motor vehicle.
An ICE spokesman told CNN earlier this month that he'd been arrested for immigration violations and that removal proceedings were pending.
Advocates for Aguilar say he crashed into a parked car after his cell phone slid off the dashboard and he reached down to pick it up. They argue a sobriety test was never performed and the DUI charge wouldn't have held up in court.
They've been pushing for months for ICE to release him, arguing he's not dangerous or a flight risk -- and deserves to return to his community and continue his studies.
Teachers told CNN they were devastated to learn recently that the homework they'd tried to send never made it to their student. An envelope filled with worksheets was returned to Aguilar's attorney, stamped "Return to sender. Refused." A handwritten note on the stamp said, "Unknown name" and "ID# required."
Without being able to keep up with his schoolwork while detained, Aguilar is behind in his classes, Brillante said. But teachers are eager to get him back on track.
"When he gets back, he gets a clean slate," she said.
