球場の外野スタンドに掲げられた星条旗が激しくはためく強風の中、ヤンキースの田中は危なげないマウンドさばきを見せた。「シーズンに向けて、いいステップになった」。四回途中まで１安打無失点。順調な調整ぶりに自然と笑みがこぼれた。
立ち上がりに少し制球が乱れ、ブレーブスの先頭打者アクーニャにファウルで粘られたが、最後はスプリットで空振り三振。キャンプで重点的に取り組むカットボールを試したほか、早いカウントでカーブを投じて効率よくストライクを先行させた。許した安打は高めの速球を打たれた１本のみ。「なかなか思い通りにいかない中で、シーズンに近い感じで投球できた」。納得の表情で振り返った。
ブーン監督は「右打者へのカットボールは素晴らしかった。キャンプを通して、マサは非常にいい状態でやれている」。田中の進化した投球を高く評価した。（タンパ時事）
