Sorenson, 60, was diagnosed Wednesday with stage 2 pancreatic cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Marriott (MAR) said he will remain in his role while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
"The cancer was discovered early. It does not appear to have spread and the medical team — and I — are confident that we can realistically aim for a complete cure," Sorensen told employees of the world's largest hotel chain.
"Let me make one request, look ahead with me. We have great work underway at Marriott. I am as excited by what we can accomplish together as I have ever been," Sorenson said. His doctors expect him to have surgery by the end of the year.
Companies are required to disclose any issues affecting leadership that could have a material impact on the business or stock. Marriott's stock was down 1% in premarket trading.
The announcement comes as the 92-year-old company ramps up expansion in Asia, with two new hotels a week across the region this year as it looks to add 300 properties to its Asian portfolio by the end of 2020.
It also recently announced a new home-sharing service to take on Airbnb.
Pancreatic cancer was the third-leading cause of death from cancer in the United States in 2018, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Earlier this week, "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek publicly spoke about his battles with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
